This footage depicts the Battle of Monte Cassino, one of the most important turning points in the Italian Campaign of World War II. From January to May 1944, Allied forces sought to break through strong German defenses blocking the road to Rome. On 18 May 1944, after fierce fighting and multinational coordination, Allied troops finally captured Monte Cassino.
